The Year of the Horse: A Time for Momentum, Energy and Women’s Health

Hi Mobsters, It’s Leah here, the founder and CEO of The House of Hormones, bringing you your weekly dose of wellbeing intel.
This week marks the beginning of the Year of the Horse in the lunar calendar, and whether you follow Chinese astrology or not, the symbolism is worth pausing for. The Horse represents movement, stamina, independence, and forward momentum. It is energy that is purposeful, dynamic, and unrestrained, a perfect metaphor for what many women, particularly mothers, need right now.
For years, women have been expected to juggle everything. Households, children’s emotional worlds, work commitments, partners’ needs, and often their own invisible labour, all while putting personal health and wellbeing on the back burner. It is no wonder that so many of us feel like we are running on the spot, exhausted yet stuck. The energy of the Horse reminds us that forward motion is not about doing more or burning out—it’s about moving intentionally, with direction and autonomy.
Movement, in this sense, doesn’t only mean exercise. It is the act of making decisions, setting boundaries, prioritising sleep, asking for help, booking that long-overdue GP appointment, or simply claiming moments of calm in a hectic day. From a physiological standpoint, this kind of momentum matters. Feeling stuck or powerless can keep cortisol levels elevated, impact mood, and even influence how our hormones regulate. Conversely, reclaiming control over our time and choices supports our nervous system and our overall wellbeing.
The Horse is also a symbol of independence and strength. For mothers, autonomy is often quietly eroded by constant caregiving. Yet research consistently shows that when women feel a sense of control over their environment and health, stress decreases, engagement improves, and outcomes follow. Prioritising ourselves is not selfish; it is foundational for our mental, emotional, and physical health. Children notice this too, learning that movement, self-care, and agency are normal and important.
So, as the Year of the Horse begins, consider where you have been stuck and where you want to move forward. This could be about your hormonal health, your sleep, your strength, or even your career and personal ambitions. Momentum does not have to mean rushing or overextending yourself; it means directing your energy intentionally, claiming space for yourself, and giving your nervous system permission to reset and thrive. This year, let’s take inspiration from the Horse: move with purpose, honour your autonomy, and put your own wellbeing front and centre. Forward doesn’t have to be fast, it just has to be yours.
Lots of Love
Leah
