Sunshine & Hormones: Why Your Mood Feels Better When the Sun Comes Out
Hi Mobsters The sun is finally out, the group chats are suddenly full of beer garden plans, and honestly? Everyone just seems a little happier when the weather changes. And it turns out, that’s not just in your head. Sunshine has a genuine impact on our hormones, mood, sleep, energy and nervous system regulation, which is why so many of us feel noticeably better after a few warm, bright days. One of the biggest reasons is serotonin, often called our “feel good” chemical. Exposure to sunlight helps stimulate serotonin production, which can improve mood, motivation and overall emotional wellbeing. It’s one of the reasons people often feel lighter, calmer and more energised during warmer months. Sunlight also helps regulate your circadian rhythm — your body’s internal clock. Getting natural light, especially in the morning, helps support healthier cortisol patterns during the day and encourages melatonin production later in the evening, meaning better sleep at night. And as we know, when sleep improves, hormones often follow. Then there’s vitamin D, which behaves more like a hormone than a vitamin in the body. It plays a role in immune health, bone health, mood, and hormone regulation, yet many women in the UK are deficient for large parts of the year. Even a short amount of safe sun exposure can help support healthy vitamin D levels naturally. But perhaps one of the most overlooked benefits of sunshine is what it encourages us to do. We slow down a little. We get outside more. We move our bodies without forcing it. A walk feels enjoyable instead of another task on the to-do list. We socialise more. We breathe more deeply. We reconnect with ourselves a bit. And all of those things matter hormonally. Movement helps support blood sugar balance, circulation and stress regulation. Fresh air and nature help calm the nervous system. Even hearing birdsong has been shown to signal safety to the brain, helping shift the body out of stress mode. So this weekend, instead of thinking about what you “should” be doing, let this be your reminder that sometimes supporting your hormones can look surprisingly simple. Go for the walk. Sit in the sunshine. Leave your phone in your bag for a little longer. Let your nervous system catch up with you. No wellness overhaul required. Just a little more light, a little more movement, and a little more connection to the world around you.Your hormones will thank you for it.
