Hormone Myths We Need to Stop Believing!

Hi Mobsters, It’s Leah here, founder of The House of Hormones, bringing you your weekly hormone intel.
when it comes to hormones, most of us are working off a mix of outdated advice, google rabbit holes, and things we heard from a friend of a friend. This week, we’re busting some of the biggest myths we hear time and time again, because the more informed we are, the better we can advocate for ourselves.

First up: “I’m too young for perimenopause.”

No, you’re not. Perimenopause can start in your mid 30s, sometimes even earlier. It doesn’t begin with your periods stopping, it often starts with subtle changes like anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, low mood, or cycle changes. Too many women are dismissed because they’re “too young,” when actually, their hormones are already shifting.

Then there’s the big one: “HRT causes cancer.”

This fear has been around for years, but it’s based on outdated research that has since been widely challenged. For most women, HRT is considered safe and can be life-changing, supporting everything from mood and sleep to bone and heart health. The conversation today is about personalised care and informed choice, not fear.

Another one we hear all the time: “The pill fixes your hormones.”

The pill can absolutely be helpful for many women, but it doesn’t “fix” hormonal imbalances, it works by suppressing your natural cycle. That can be the right choice for some, but it’s important to understand what it’s doing, rather than assuming it’s solving the root cause. It can often also have a negative affect for many.

And finally: “It’s just stress.”

How many times have women been told this? Yes, stress plays a role in our health, but it’s often used as a blanket explanation when symptoms aren’t fully understood. Anxiety, low mood, fatigue, brain fog, even physical symptoms like joint pain or palpitations can all have a hormonal component. Being told it’s “just stress” can stop women from getting the support they actually need.
The truth is, women’s health has been under-researched for years, and we’re only just starting to catch up. That’s why these myths still exist, and why conversations like this matter so much. At The House of Hormones, we are all about breaking these myths down with real experts. On our podcast, we speak to leading doctors and specialists who cut through the noise and give you information you can actually trust.
So if you’ve ever felt confused, dismissed, or just unsure where to start, you are not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out on your own either.
Head to the podcast, have a listen, and if there’s something you’ve always wondered about, send it to us. Drop into our Instagram DMs or join the FORUM and tell us the myths you’ve heard, the questions you’ve been too afraid to ask, or the symptoms you’ve been told to ignore.
Because the more we talk about this, the less power the myths have.
With love,
THOH x
