Why We Need to Stop Dismissing Our Symptoms By Leah, Psychologist & CEO of The House of Hormones
Morning Mobsters!
It’s Leah here, Mobster, Mum, Psychologist and CEO of The HOuse of Hormones. I am The MOB’s weekly Wellbeing Blog writer, covering everything you need to know about hormone health.
Let me start with something I see far too often, intelligent, capable, busy women saying things like “I don’t want to waste anyone's time” or “I’m probably just overreacting.” Sound familiar? As mums, we’ve been socially conditioned to minimise our symptoms and question our instincts.
This is called self-gaslighting! When we override our own internal alarm bells, rationalise discomfort, or dismiss physical and emotional changes as “just tiredness,” “just hormones,” or “just part of being a mum.” Here’s the truth: you are not imagining things.
Hormonal health is complex, especially during the transitions of perimenopause, menopause, and postpartum recovery. Your body is constantly in conversation with you, through fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, changes in weight, sleep disturbances, anxiety, irregular periods, low libido… and the list goes on.
In fact, recent research has identified over 80 recognised symptoms of perimenopause alone. Eighty. That is not a coincidence. And yet many of us still downplay the signs, because culturally we’ve been taught to “get on with it” , to prioritise everyone else’s needs over our own.
But your symptoms are data. They’re clues. And when you learn how to listen, they can guide you to better health, better decisions, and better outcomes, not just for you, but for your family as well.
As both a psychologist and a woman who has walked this path, I know how easy it is to doubt yourself, especially when your GP says “your bloods are normal” or friends brush it off with “same here!” That’s why I believe in tracking your symptoms over time. Not obsessively, but intentionally.
That’s why we created our free Symptom Tracker at The House of Hormones. It’s in our Free Downloads section, and it’s designed to help you tune into your body and spot patterns you might otherwise miss. You can jot things down daily or weekly, however suits your life, and bring it with you to your next appointment, so you’re not left scrambling to remember everything in the moment.
This isn’t about being dramatic. It’s about being informed.
And for you amazing MOBsters reading this, you already carry so much. You juggle school runs, family admin, work pressures, and let’s be honest, more emotional labour than most households know what to do with. You deserve to feel good in your body, not just survive the day.
So if you’ve been second-guessing yourself, take this as your permission to stop. You’re not being silly. You’re being wise.
Download the tracker. Start listening inward. You don’t need to wait for things to get worse before you take yourself seriously.
You’re the CEO of your own health, and you’ve got this.
