Hi Mobsters, it’s Leah here from The House of Hormones delivering your weekly wellbeing intel.
I want to talk about something that we hear a lot about here at The House of Hormones: meno-washing.
Now, meno-washing is essentially the menopause version of greenwashing. It’s when a brand takes a product, sticks the word meno, peri, hormones or women’s health on it, makes big claims about what it can do for you, and suddenly, it’s a menopause product. And sometimes… it really isn’t.
It might be an ordinary product that already existed, given a new label and marketed specifically to women. Sometimes it’s even something you could buy in a much cheaper form elsewhere, but because it’s been repackaged and targeted towards women, the price goes up.
And that brings us to another issue: the pink tax. We’ve seen this for years. Products marketed towards women can cost more simply because they’re marketed towards women. Meno-washing can become another version of that, taking advantage of women who are actively looking for solutions to something that is affecting their everyday lives.
But here’s where I think we need to be really careful. Because meno-washing is real. Absolutely. But that does not mean that every product designed for women going through perimenopause or menopause is a scam. In fact, here at The House of Hormones, we’re actually pretty pro-product. And I know that might surprise you. Because we’re also very selective about the products and brands we talk about. The reality is that women are different. Some women can’t take HRT. Some don’t want to take HRT. Some can’t or don’t want to take the pill. And sometimes women simply want additional options to support their health and wellbeing.
So why shouldn’t women have access to better products? Why shouldn’t brands clearly tell women, this is a product designed with you in mind? The problem isn’t necessarily that a product is marketed towards women. The problem is when the claims aren’t backed up, the ingredients aren’t transparent, and women are being asked to pay a premium for something that doesn’t deliver.
And that’s exactly why we created THOH inHouse Studies.
We wanted to put women back in the driving seat. Brands send products to women in our community for free, and then the women actually use them. They tell us what they think. They report back on their experiences. They have conversations with each other. And ultimately, they help us answer the question: Does this product actually deliver? Because these aren’t anonymous reviews pulled from the internet. These are real women in our community. Real products have been sent to their homes. Real women have actually used them.
And you can see the products we’ve already studied on our website, along with the results and the conversations from the women taking part.
Head to thehouseofhormones.com, go to our Verified Products section and then inHouse Studies.
You can also see the group conversations around individual studies and hear directly from the women taking part.
And if you want to be part of it, you can join our community too, because you could be one of the women testing these products. Because ultimately, I don’t think brands should be the only ones deciding what works for women. And I don’t think The House of Hormones should decide either. We all should. The women using these products should.
So yes, let’s call out the meno-washing. Let’s question the claims. Let’s question the price. Let’s look at the ingredients and the evidence. But let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are some genuinely brilliant products being created for women, and women deserve to know which ones are worth their money. It’s time we took back control. Let’s decide together what deserves a place in women’s health.
