It’s back-to-school season! I never know if term time makes life easier or harder — with school runs, homework, and clubs it can feel relentless. But it does offer an opportunity: to get back into looking after *you*.
This month, as XENA's offering to the MOB, our focus is on something many women find frustrating — going to the doctor to discuss hormones. It’s well-documented that this can feel like an uphill battle. To help, our women’s health doctors have created practical downloads so you can get informed, prepare, and advocate for the support you deserve in the next phase of womanhood. I’ve also included a fantastic resource from the brilliant Tamsen Fadel.
Alongside that, our nutritional therapist Katy Bradbury has shared an important video on gut health. Because let’s not forget: hormones are just one part of the picture. Your overall health is shaped by many factors — mood, nutrition, exercise, sleep — so it always deserves a panoramic approach.
If you’re struggling with hormones, please don’t suffer in silence. Track your symptoms for at least three months. Nothing is too small or irrelevant — it’s all evidence. You know your body best. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
Testing may need to be done privately, but a specialist menopause doctor or nutritional therapist who works with hormones can support you even without tests. The key is finding someone knowledgeable who truly listens and cares. And remember — perimenopause can begin from around 35, so you are not too young.
And of course, because exercise is my thing , I’ve included videos to help you build strength, mobility, and impact. Your body will thank you for it.
So, consider this your nudge: look after number one, book that appointment you’ve been putting off, and get back on the wagon. You’ve got this!

HABIT STACK to achieve your goals
If stretching / exercise is something you want to get into the habit of doing regularly (it's so good for us - mentally and physically, go for it!), then choose a time when you're able to attach the exercise to an existing routine you do everyday. This is a great way to build any new habits and achieve your goals.
For example, you could do the 5 minute stretch straight after you get out of bed in the morning or after you've handed your kids their breakfast (stretch while they eat).
Top Tip - make life easy for yourself. Put any equipment (ie a yoga mat) or clothes needed for you to do the exercise, out the night before to avoid any procrastination faff in the morning

XENA is my Ikigai.
At the age of 12 I lost my first patch of hair with alopecia. What a ride that would be.
After nearly 30 years of losing and gaining and then losing my hair again I learnt that it was down to me to decide how I felt, how I showed up, how I coped and moved forwards.
There were tears, sadness, depression and fear. But there was also a determination not to be defined nor held back by this auto immune disease.
As a physiotherapist of 15 years, I often found my strength lay in empowering my clients to believe their body wasn't broken beyond repair, that they had the capability to heal and move forwards.
Then came motherhood.... another curveball. Different but equally seismic. I was blown away by how little I knew about my body even as a physio.
I am a mother of two little girls, a physiotherapist of 15 years, and the founder of XENA.
