The Male Contraceptive Pill Is Here… But Do You Trust Men to Take It?
Written by The House of Hormones Founder and CEO, Leah.
Mobsters, gather round. We’ve got big news in the world of sexual health, and this week, it’s not about our hormones.
the first non-hormonal male contraceptive pill has passed its first human safety trials
Scientists have just announced that the first non-hormonal male contraceptive pill has passed its first human safety trials, with zero side-effects. Yup. None. Nada. Not even a moody sulk or a sudden craving for Dairy Milk. The magic pill in question is called YCT-529 (bit of a clunky name, we vote for something sexier, like the “Man-Datory”).
Here’s the info breakdown:
It’s non-hormonal, so it doesn’t mess with testosterone or libido.
It’s 99% effective in animal trials and completely reversible.
Fertility comes back within weeks once you stop.
And it might not even require daily dosing.
Now, before we all pop the champagne and retire our own contraception stash, let’s address the elephant in the bedroom, would you actually trust a man to take it?
Because, let’s be honest, how many of them can remember bin day, let alone a pill schedule? We’ve spent decades juggling birth control, side-effects, and alarm reminders on our phones. And we have all been guilty of forgetting at some point, so do we dare hand over the reins?
This isn’t about man-shaming at all. We all know how hard it is to take a daily pill, thats why a lot of us are asking this question.
It’s about recognising the mental load that contraception has always placed on women. We’ve taken the hormones, dealt with the mood swings, endured the bloating, the migraines, the weird skin changes, and smiled politely while the leaflet listed blood clot risk as if it were nothing.
Meanwhile, this shiny new male pill comes along and… drum roll… no mood changes, no sex drive dip, no changes in body chemistry at all. Excuse me for being frustrated that this hasn't appeared sooner, or that there hasn't been more developments with the female pills.
However, my despair aside, this could be revolutionary. It’s a chance for shared responsibility in relationships, for both partners to take an equal role in family planning. Imagine the conversations it could spark. Imagine the freedom for women whose bodies have shouldered the brunt of contraception for decades.
Here’s the catch though, science can give us the tools, but it’s culture, habits, and trust that decide whether they’re used. Some men will absolutely step up. Others might need a little bit of encouragement. And does this change anything for people who are not in long term relationships?
So Mobsters, we want to know, if YCT-529 was available tomorrow, would you have full trust in the men in your life to take it ? Or would you keep a Plan B in your handbag, just in case?
This is a total breakthrough in reproductive choice and equity. Time, it seems, is the next barrier. It aims to be ready by 2030, so we have little bit of time to think it over!
Lots of love
