Are You Clueless About Perimenopause?

As Clueless celebrates its 30th anniversary (yep, we’re all collectively gasping), it’s the perfect time to ask, when it comes to your hormones, are you feeling a bit… well, clueless?

We all remember learning about puberty in school and the awkward videos. Tick. Fertility? Tick. We were taught how not to get pregnant and what ovulation means, maybe. But anything beyond that? Like perimenopause, menopause, or how hormones affect everything from our skin to our mood to our metabolism?

Big. Fat. No.

So here we are, a generation of women who know what to do when our period starts, but no idea what it means when it starts going missing, showing up with mood swings, night sweats, anxiety, or brain fog. And we’re just supposed to figure it out? As if!

Perimenopause isn’t a single moment, it’s a phase. It can start in your 30s or 40s (yep, that early) and includes the years leading up to menopause. It’s when your hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, start fluctuating. This hormonal rollercoaster can show up as irregular cycles, low mood, sleep issues, irritability, brain fog, dry skin, painful sex, bloating… shall I go on?

It’s like puberty 2.0, but with more responsibilities, less time, and zero support unless you go looking for it.

And that’s the problem. We were never taught this part. No one sat us down to say, “Here’s what to expect in your 40s,” or “Here’s how to support your hormones now so you feel empowered, not blindsided, later.”

We teach girls how to use a tampon, but not how to recognise perimenopausal rage. We warn teens about pregnancy, but not about plummeting oestrogen and what that can do to your mental health. We celebrate becoming a woman, but ignore the fact that being a woman means navigating hormonal shifts across a lifetime, not just in adolescence.

So no wonder so many of us feel clueless when perimenopause hits. We weren’t given the script.

But here’s the good news, we can rewrite it.
